Is Living A Fit And Healthy Life A Dream?

As kids, we start our days full of energy and we look forward to enjoying every single minute of every hour. We devour all the treats and delights of Grandma’s favorite recipes. We are always on the go, on the move: running, jumping around, climbing, chasing one another. Our metabolism functions at its best and we burn those calorie intakes in no time. Life energy flows through our veins. We feel great. We’re on top of the world. We are unstoppable.

Most of us go through adolescence wishing to add a few extra pounds to our absolutely fit and super-shaped body. We start nonchalantly hitting the gym under the false pretext to ‘gain weight’ and add muscle to our skinny body. We still eat all the good food and dieting is the last thing on our mind.

A few years later, some of us will start college life or other trades, and soon we will be facing some life challenges. Then we become busier. We prioritize some things over other things. The new lifestyle starts taking its course. We face new responsibilities. We become adult-like. Our life is buried into our career and our family. We have very little time to take care of ourselves. We eat in a fast and hurry pace whatever food is the easiest and the fastest. We become less active.

A newcomer named Stress starts crawling into our daily life. Our metabolism naturally starts slowing down in direct relation to stressful living. We have less and less energy to go about our day. And it shows in our body in the form of love handles, a beer or pot belly, man’s boobs, a sluggish body, etc… Life still gets busy and we get caught up in a vicious cycle and become more and more depressed everyday.

Some of us will flex our weak decision making muscles and try yet another diet program just to see ourselves, a few days or weeks later, rolling down the same old roads, speeding up the wrong way at 100 miles per hour.

If you’ve been down this road, you know that it doesn’t come pain free. We suffer the humiliation of a shameful and disease-prone body. We lose all sense of self-esteem and our confidence hits rock bottom. We feel lost. We have no other choice but to detour, to change path, direction; To find our way back once again. But how do we reclaim our Fitness Life? How do we get back to our ideal body shape, how does life get to be enjoyable again?

First we have to be honest with ourselves. Ask ourselves: Is living 40, 80,120 pounds overweight really living? Do we take responsibility for our lack of discipline? Are we ready for some changes? All it takes is to make a decision to start Living. Of course, losing weight is not painless. It takes determination. Nonetheless, when the going gets tough, we need to remember why we “suffer”, why we must resist the temptation of overeating, of emotional eating, of that extra scoop of our favorite ice cream. Making some simple life adjustment, changing some of our eating habits will have a crucial and positive impact in our weight management goal. We need to educate ourselves in that regard and make some effective changes in the pursuit of our fitness goal.

It’s attainable. It is doable. A healthy life is ours for the taking. We just need to combine our new eating habits with some reasonable physical activities and stick to it. We can and will do it because our life (and our kids life) depends on it. So be more active and proactive. Add quality foods to our diet. Find some physical exercises that you like and engage in performing them everyday. A day without exercises should be like a day without food. Feed those hungry muscles everyday – with exercises, that is. Go for a walk in the park. Boost your fiber intake. Cut down on high fat calorie foods. Stay hydrated by drinking half your weight in ounces of water everyday. Share a meal, share an exercise you enjoy with a partner. Dance to your favorite music. Spice up your sex life!

Losing weight takes time, so be patient and don’t ever forget why you’re doing it: you’re doing it for yourself and for those whom love you. Also remember, it’s a journey. Not a sprint but a marathon. You will get to the finish line thinner, healthier. You can do it! You can live the good life!

Health Care For Everyone; What is the Incentive to live a Healthy Life?

If everyone gets free health care what is the incentive to live a healthy life, eat right and work out every day? Why bother? After all if there is free health care for everyone why not just wait to you have a medical problem and then go get fixed, why bother to work out? Why bother to walk around the block every day; why bother to jog?

Do you see the problem with universal health care in the United States of America paid for by the government and our tax dollars? The entire idea is flawed. Personally I don’t want to pay for people who do not take care of themselves, do not exercise, abuse alcohol and drugs and eat crappy foods.

That is not fair to me and I should not have to pay for them. They don’t care so, why should I? And why should my taxes go up so people that don’t take care about themselves can abuse yet another government social program? Now you are probably saying; yet you Republicans; always complain about taxes and you never have a solution.

Well I say to you, I do have a solution and it is a really simple one; let’s give tax incentives for people who exercise, eat right and do not do drugs or abuse alcohol. Let’s reward people for getting back in shape and in the long run we will be Bucks ahead with a whole lot less people in our population with major medical issues down the road.

Good Dental Care Begins at Home – Healthy Teeth for a Healthy Life

Most of us care about how our teeth look when we smile, so that’s the first incentive we have to take good care of our teeth. It’s also widely accepted that good oral hygiene and good general health go together. Proper oral hygiene includes a simple daily routine of tooth brushing, flossing, and even tongue cleaning. This should always be supplemented by regular checkups with a dentist. Additionally, eating a healthy, balanced diet and avoiding certain habits contributes to a healthy mouth and teeth, as well as our general health.

Dental authorities recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day. This should be done after eating, to clean away any acids, coatings or particles left behind by foods. Use fluoride toothpaste with a soft bristled toothbrush. A proper job of tooth brushing should take about 2 minutes and reach all exposed surfaces. Take care not to scrub too vigorously, because you can irritate your gums and wear down the tooth enamel. Replace the brush about every three months, because a toothbrush with worn or bent bristles can’t clean properly and might even injure your gums.

The proper technique is to hold the brush at a 45 degree angle against the gumline and move the brush in small circles over the teeth. Start in one quadrant of the mouth, such as the upper left side, and move forward across the front of the teeth and around to the opposite side. Clean the inner surfaces the same way. On the insides of the front teeth, it’s easier to hold the brush vertically and use the tip to make the circles against the inner surfaces. Finish by brushing flat across the biting surfaces in short back and forth strokes. Next, brush your tongue from back to front on both the upper and lower surfaces. A surprising amount of bacteria exists on the tongue, and this will remove most of it.

After brushing, floss the teeth to remove food particles and plaque that the brush cannot reach. Begin by cutting off a piece of floss about 18 inches long, and wrap the ends around the middle fingers on each hand, leaving about an inch or so in the middle. With the thumb and forefingers, gently press the floss into the space between two teeth, and gently pull it up from the gumline to the point of the tooth to remove plaque and debris. Wrap the floss around the side of the tooth and repeat. Pull the floss up and out, unwind a little new floss, and move to the next space. If the floss gets caught in a tight space, do not force it out! Simply let go of one end and pull it out horizontally. Waxed floss might be easier for some people to use, and others might like to try a floss holder.

After brushing and flossing, a good extra step is to rinse the mouth with an antimicrobial or antiseptic mouthwash. Some formulas even contain ingredients to help preserve the tooth enamel.

The entire routine of brushing, flossing and rinsing should take only 3-5 minutes, and it will reward you with a nice smile, and good dental and general health for many years.

Don’t overlook the importance of having an annual or semi-annual checkup with a good dentist. A thorough dental exam can uncover health problems you may be unaware of, because signs often occur in the mouth before they appear elsewhere. For example, some eating disorders, cancers and other diseases can be detected early in the mouth, and then successfully treated. Naturally, the dentist will also catch and treat any cavities or gum disease before they get out of hand, and can spot any problems developing in tooth or jaw alignment.

These routine and simple dental care steps, if followed regularly, will pay us huge dividends towards maintaining good dental and general health. That’s really something to smile about!
